At the 55 year reunion it was decided to proceed with the establishment of a Lancaster High School Class of 1957 Memorial Scholarship Fund through the Fairfield County Foundation, a 501(c)(3) charitable foundation.
Our initial goal is to raise $57,000, the income from which will be used to award scholarships to deserving Lancaster High School graduates for them to attend post-secondary education institutions for 4 year or 2 year programs. To be eligible the applicants must
(1) be currently enrolled in or have been accepted into a program leading to a bachelor degree or associate degree;
(2) have demonstrated potential for high school or post high school academic achievement; and
(3) have a financial need.
We are soliciting tax deductible donations to the Foundation scholarship fund from class members through current gifts or by gifts made from the Last Will and Testaments of class members. Pledges for contribution may be made periodically or in a lump sum. For further information classmates should contact the Executive Director of the Fairfield County Foundation, Amy Eyman, at 740-654-8451. The Fund is fully operational and, as of June 30, 2017, we have already received contributions totaling $72,595.06. Donations may be mailed to: Amy Eyman, Executive Director, Fairfield County Foundation, 162 E. Main Street, Lancaster, OH 43130
Having created the fund, we now need to select three people who are willing to participate in the application review and award process which will take place during the months of April and May to award for the following school year. Those class members would be joined with the LHS principal, or his designee, and a representative of the Foundation. The scholarship applications will be processed through the offices of the Foundation and distributed to the selection committee members.
We are pleased to announce we have awarded our first scholarship from the LHS Class of 1957 Memorial Scholarship Fund.
In April 2017, Ann Swearingen, Anna Mae Wagner and Jerry Stebelton met with the LHS assistant principal Nathan Conrad and the guidance counselor from LHS Mary Jo Wooten plus Amy Eyman, executive director of the Fairfield County Foundation, and reviewed resumes from 10 students who met the criteria set forth by the fund.
We are pleased to advise you that a current senior, Finley Kocher is the recipient of the award for $1,680 to assist her with her finances at the Ohio State University, Columbus campus this fall.
Finley is ranked 12th in her class of 410 prospective graduates, achieved an ACT score of 30 and earned a 4.239 g.p.a. thru the fall semester of her senior year. She also participated in soccer, field hockey and both indoor and outdoor track and field at LHS. Finley intends to pursue a career in the neurological sciences field at OSU. She is an absolutely delightful young lady.
We have invited Finley to attend our 60 year class reunion dinner on October 14th to acknowledge the receipt of this scholarship and to meet with those class members who are present.
If you are interested in volunteering to be a member of this screening/selection committee please advise Jerry Stebelton at GLS@stebelton.com.
